Retired Major Reportedly Gets Life Sentence in Kidnapping and Extortion Case

Seventeen years after the crime, an anti-terrorism court has reportedly sentenced a retired major and his accomplice to life imprisonment for kidnapping a businessman and extorting Rs. 16 million in ransom, Dawn has reported.

Retired Major Nawazish Akbar and Naveed Khan were reportedly convicted for abducting Sher Bahadur in 2006, securing Rs. 7 million in cash and Rs. 9 million in jewelry as ransom payments.

The court also reportedly imposed additional penalties, including three years for unlawful detention, seven years for stealing the victim’s car, and a second life sentence under anti-terrorism laws. It further ordered the confiscation of their properties.

Prosecutor Muhammad Raza revealed the case was delayed by over a year before being filed, following orders from the sessions court. The complaint reportedly alleged Nawazish, a former five percent shareholder in Bahadur’s construction firm, turned to threats after failing to honor a business settlement.

In 2006, Nawazish and his associates reportedly ambushed Bahadur and his brother, abducting Bahadur and holding him captive for six months. The victim testified to being coerced into surrendering company shares and enduring threats.

Supporting evidence reportedly included over 700 pages of documents detailing financial fraud and forced agreements. The court noted Nawazish’s influence contributed to delays in justice, underscoring the extensive exploitation faced by the victim.
