A citizen has taken legal action against a shoe retailer in Karachi for imposing an additional charge on a plastic shopping bag, prompting the Sindh government to intervene.
According to reports, the issue was raised on the Prime Minister’s Portal, leading to official action against the company. The complainant alleged they were forced to pay Rs. 30 for a shopping bag after purchasing shoes.
Assistant Director of the Bureau of Supply Prices, Mir Shahnawaz, forwarded the complaint to the Consumer Protection Court, stating that the shoe store failed to respond to multiple notices.
As a result, the case was formally filed in the Consumer Protection Court (South), with a hearing scheduled for March 6.
Meanwhile, similar cases have been reported in consumer courts. Last month, a transport company was fined for overcharging passengers during Eid.
The Consumer Protection Court (East) penalized the bus service with a Rs. 75,000 fine, ordering Rs. 50,000 in compensation to the complainant and Rs. 25,000 for legal costs. Additionally, the company was directed to refund the Rs600 it had overcharged.
