Verizon Enables Text Chatting Via Satellite Connections for the First Time

Verizon has rolled out a new non-emergency satellite texting capability for specific smartphones, following an earlier service limited to emergency communications. This updated option is available on Google Pixel 9 series and Samsung Galaxy S25 smartphones, allowing them to send text messages via satellite when conventional cellular coverage is unavailable.

Rollout Details

Verizon made the feature accessible a few days ago, with a complete deployment expected over the next two weeks. During this period, owners of Pixel 9 and Galaxy S25 phones on Verizon’s network in the US can expect to see a software update enabling the satellite-based texting feature. After installing the update, these devices can send texts to any other phone, even in areas without any cellular signals.

How it Works

Instead of using standard cell towers, the new system employs a satellite connection. When a device cannot detect a regular network, it switches to satellite mode to transmit and receive messages. This method may be helpful in regions with difficult terrain, sparse populations, or other conditions where traditional signals are limited.

Practical Uses

Verizon has not disclosed details regarding data speeds or any potential fees for non-emergency satellite texting. This feature may benefit those who frequently venture into remote locations, travel extensively, or otherwise find themselves outside typical coverage. While the carrier’s focus has shifted from emergency-only to more routine usage, there is no confirmation yet on whether additional phones will eventually be supported.
