Quetta Gladiators have added an element of surprise to their bowling attack ahead of PSL X, drafting in right-arm mystery spinner Ali Majid as a partial replacement for New Zealand’s Mark Chapman, who will miss the start of the tournament.
Ali Majid, a product of Lahore Qalandars’ talent hunt program, has been steadily building a reputation in Pakistan’s T20 circuit for a while with his variations and control. The 33-year-old is classified as a leg-spinner but possesses an array of deliveries capable of bamboozling any experienced batter.
The spinner comes with PSL experience as well, having previously played for Peshawar Zalmi after roster stints with Qalandars and Multan Sultans in earlier seasons, although opportunities at the highest level have been limited.
Mark Chapman, Gladiators’ Platinum pick, will be unavailable for part of the PSL. However, with plenty of cover up top, the management has opted for a different tactical adjustment — bolstering their spin resources in conditions that may become favorable throughout the course of the tournament.
Ali Majid’s inclusion adds variety to a Quetta attack, but he may see his opportunities limited in an attack that already features established names like Abrar Ahmed, Usman Tariq, and Akeal Hossein.
Even with that inevitability, Ali Majid has been quickly building a name for himself in Pakistan’s domestic scene. A right-armer capable of bowling with subtle changes of pace, Ali Majid impressed in the National T20 Cup with his ability to contain runs in the middle overs and pick up crucial wickets through deception rather than raw turn.
He finished with 4 wickets in five matches in the National T20 Cup while playing for Multan, but his economy rate of just 5.88 caught everyone’s eye.
Quetta Gladiators’ PSL journey in recent seasons has been inconsistent, but the recruitment of Ali Majid reflects a willingness to explore new tactical options. For Majid, PSL X presents the biggest stage yet to prove he belongs among Pakistan’s top-tier T20 spinners.
Quetta will open its PSL X campaign on April 12 against Peshawar Zalmi.
