The Dairy Farmers Association has announced a unilateral increase in milk prices by Rs. 10 per litre from May 1, rejecting the official rate list issued by the district administration.
Following the hike, buffalo milk’s wholesale rate will rise to Rs. 220 per litre. Cow milk will be sold at Rs. 170 per litre, reflecting a Rs. 7.50 increase. A mix of cow and buffalo milk will be priced at Rs. 195 per litre. Retail rates are also expected to go up by Rs. 10 per litre.
This move has widened the gap between market and official rates, with the Deputy Commissioner’s notified price for milk still standing at Rs. 170 per litre.
Dairy Farmers Association President Rafiq Gujjar said the revised prices will remain in effect for one year.
In response, the Motorcycle Milk Sellers Union staged a protest at Gawala Colony, calling the price hike unjustified. Union President Irshad Gujjar demanded intervention from the Punjab Chief Minister and warned that if the decision is not reversed, milk supply in the city would be suspended.
