Islamabad United’s Foreign Star Will Not Join Them This Season

After losing Australian batter Matt Short, Islamabad United suffered another setback as South African batsman Rassie van der Dussen has all but confirmed that he will not be joining Islamabad United for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 season. The franchise made the announcement today. The 36-year-old, who was expected to bolster the defending champions’ middle order, has been ruled out due to personal reasons, leaving the team to adjust their plans for the ongoing tournament.

An Islamabad United spokesman shared the news, stating, “Rassie van der Dussen won’t be able to join IU this season due to personal reasons.” The team expressed their full support for van der Dussen’s decision but did not provide further details about his absence.

Earlier reports in March had indicated that van der Dussen would be partially unavailable, leading to the signing of Australia’s Alex Carey as a temporary replacement. However, Carey also withdrew due to domestic commitments in Australia, and now van der Dussen’s complete absence has been confirmed.

Van der Dussen, a key player for United in PSL 9 with 364 runs in seven innings at an average of 72.8, was expected to play a vital role this season. He has previously played for United in 2023 and Lahore Qalandars in 2024, amassing 6,075 T20 runs globally at a strike rate of 131.86.
