With the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 entering its decisive phase, Lahore Qalandars find themselves at a critical juncture to qualify for the PSL X playoffs.
Sitting at fourth on the points table with 9 points from 9 matches, the Qalandars have one final league game to turn their campaign around and secure a spot in the top four.
With Quetta Gladiators already through and Multan Sultans knocked out, the race for the remaining playoff spots is heating up, and Lahore’s fate is reliant on a couple of intriguing scenarios.
Currently, Qalandars boast a net run rate (NRR) of 0.958, which could prove to be vital. However, their recent four-wicket loss to arch-rivals Karachi Kings at Gaddafi Stadium has dented their momentum, leaving them with a do-or-die mindset for their last fixture against Peshawar Zalmi.
As it stands, two distinct paths lie ahead for Shaheen Shah Afridi’s men to punch their ticket to the playoffs.
Scenario 1
In the first scenario, Lahore could secure qualification without even stepping onto the field for their final match.
If Peshawar Zalmi, who are fifth with 6 points from 7 games, lose both of their remaining fixtures against Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans, they will be stuck on 6 points. This would automatically propel Lahore into the playoffs with their existing 9 points, rendering the final clash a mere formality.
Zalmi’s recent form, despite a gritty win over Islamabad United, suggests they are vulnerable, and Lahore fans will be praying for slip-ups in their upcoming ties.
Scenario 2
The second scenario, however, promises high drama. Should Peshawar Zalmi win at least one of their two games, against either Multan Sultans or Karachi Kings, their points tally would rise to 8 or even 10 if they triumph in both.
This would transform the Lahore Qalandars vs. Peshawar Zalmi clash into a virtual knockout.
Lahore must win to reach 11 points, ensuring they leapfrog Zalmi and potentially others, depending on how the rest of the tournament progresses for Islamabad United and Karachi Kings. A loss here could see their campaign end in heartbreak, as Zalmi could overtake them with a superior points haul.
With the stakes sky-high, Qalandars will need their big guns to fire on all cylinders and not falter at the end like they did against Karachi Kings, losing from a strong position. Their batting has shown flashes of brilliance, but consistency will be key.
Meanwhile, Zalmi, led by Babar Azam, have the firepower to upset any side on their day, making this potential decider a mouth-watering prospect for PSL enthusiasts.
