In the midst of a turbulent second phase of PSL X, Lahore Qalandars have made a timely overseas addition, signing Sri Lankan top-order batter Avishka Fernando to bolster their squad ahead of the tournament’s resumption on May 17.
Fernando’s signing was confirmed by Sri Lankan outlet The Papare and comes at a time when franchises are scrambling to plug gaps left by unavailable foreign players.
With Sikandar Raza ruled out due to national duties in Zimbabwe, and other international players opting out for a myriad of reasons, Lahore was in urgent need of a reliable overseas batter to provide top-order stability—and Avishka Fernando fits the bill.
The 27-year-old, known for his attacking stroke play and ability to take on pace early, has been a consistent performer in both domestic T20s and for Sri Lanka in limited-overs cricket. While this will be his first PSL appearance, he brings experience from leagues like the Lanka Premier League (LPL) and has a reputation for turning games around with rapid-fire innings.
He is also coming off an ILT20 season where he scored 131 runs in six innings at a blazing strike rate of 207.93.
For a Qalandars outfit fighting to get into the playoffs, Avishka Fernando’s inclusion could offer fresh energy in what has been a frustrating season for the two-time champions. Despite their star-studded lineup, Lahore has failed to click collectively in PSL X, and with playoffs now also in danger, the focus should be on leaving no stone unturned.
Lahore Qalandars will now hope that Avishka Fernando settles quickly into the setup and makes an impact in the remaining game or games if they reach the playoffs. With the PSL set to resume with a short, intense run from May 17 to May 25, every player signing from this point forward could tip the balance.
