The Sindh government has extended the deadline for installing Ajrak-themed number plates until August 14, during which time police have been instructed not to fine vehicles that have yet to switch to the new design.
The announcement was made by Provincial Minister for Excise, Taxation, and Narcotics Control Mukesh Kumar Chawla in Karachi on Monday.
“Ajrak represents Sindh’s cultural identity and it will remain part of the new number plates,” Chawla said. He noted that while some people had raised concerns, the design also serves as a security feature.
He clarified that no fines will be issued for vehicles that have not yet replaced their plates with the official Ajrak-themed ones until the new deadline. However, other violations—such as riding without a helmet or lacking valid documents—will still be penalised as usual.
The Ajrak number plates, integrated with the Safe City project, are being rolled out for all vehicles across the province. The initiative has faced some criticism over design and legality, but the government insists the move enhances both cultural visibility and security.
Chawla reaffirmed that the new plates are mandatory, and the deadline extension is meant to give citizens more time to comply.
