Former Spurs Goalkeeper to Receive Call-Up to Pakistan Football Team

Pakistan Football team’s fans could have even more reason to celebrate in the coming days after reports revealed that the PFF is close to bringing former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Alfie Malik Whiteman on board as it looks to chart a better future under its new head coach.

After bringing Nolberto Solano on board as head coach, the PFF has turned its attention to plugging the gaps, with the man between the sticks considered a priority. This search has brought them to Alfie Whiteman, and a move for the 26-year-old could mark a generational shift in the country’s goalkeeping landscape.

The move was brought to everyone’s attention by Zeeshan Shafi, a man familiar with matters related to PFF.

Born on October 2, 1998, in London, Whiteman is eligible to play for Pakistan through his maternal grandfather. Under Mohsen Gilani’s leadership, the PFF has reportedly initiated contact, with a long-term vision of integrating him as a key figure and potentially a successor to Yousuf Butt.

Alfie Whiteman’s connection to Pakistan runs deeper than just heritage. He is a close friend of Easah Suliman, the current captain of Pakistan’s national team. The two played together for various England youth sides, most notably at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup, as part of a highly-rated generation.

Their shared history and mutual respect could have played a pivotal role in convincing Whiteman to switch allegiances and join the Pakistan setup, which is undergoing a strategic rebuild under Solano.

Whiteman joined Tottenham Hotspur’s Academy in 2015 and steadily progressed through the youth ranks. His first-team debut came on November 26, 2020, when he replaced Joe Hart in the UEFA Europa League clash against Ludogorets Razgrad. He eventually left the club this year by mutual consent.

In order to don the Pakistan shirt, Alfie Whiteman would need to obtain citizenship, a process he qualifies for through his ancestry, and formally declare his international allegiance to the Pakistan Football Federation. While no official commitment has yet been made, talks are progressing, and the PFF is reportedly optimistic.

As the PFF continues to battle to make football relevant again in Pakistan, landing a talent like Whiteman underscores its  commitment to doing right by the fans. For Whiteman, it offers an opportunity to play regular international football and represent a country that’s eager to rise from the shadows of Asian football.

As the ball rolls toward the announcement, Pakistani fans will watch with cautious optimism. If Alfie Whiteman chooses the green of Pakistan over the white of England, it could mark the beginning of something truly transformative.
