The International Cricket Council (ICC) is reportedly nearing the final stages of its planning for the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, with a provisional schedule pointing to a February 7 to March 8 window.
The tournament is set to be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka, utilizing at least five venues in India and two in Sri Lanka.
Following the successful expanded format of the 2024 edition in the USA and West Indies, the 2026 T20 World Cup will also feature 20 teams. This larger field promises to deliver a mix of established powerhouses and emerging nations on the global stage.
A significant point of discussion remains the venue for the final, with Ahmedabad, the host of the 2023 ODI World Cup, and Colombo being the frontrunners. The final decision will likely depend on Pakistan’s run in the tournament. If the Green Shirts reach the ultimate stage, the game will be played at a neutral venue in Sri Lanka.
To date, 15 teams have secured their berths in the tournament: Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand, West Indies, USA, Ireland, Netherlands, Canada, and Italy. A notable addition to this list is Italy, who will be making their debut in a senior ICC World Cup, marking a historic moment for the nation’s cricket.
The remaining five spots will be filled through regional qualifiers, with two spots allocated to Africa and three to Asia and East Asia-Pacific.
The tournament format will mirror the 2024 edition, commencing with four groups of five teams. The top two teams from each group will progress to the Super Eight stage, followed by the semi-finals and the final. In total, 55 matches will be played, ensuring a month-long spectacle of cricketing action.
For Pakistan, the possibility of playing their matches in Sri Lanka will bring back memories of the 2012 T20 World Cup, where the team advanced to the semi-finals in Colombo. Fans are now eagerly awaiting the official draw to learn their team’s schedule and, potentially, the location of a high-stakes encounter with India.
