The fines for Indian and Pakistani players by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following their on-field clashes are coming thick and fast, with Haris Rauf the latest to learn his fate.
According to international sources, Haris has been adjudged in breach of the ICC’s Code of Conduct and has been sanctioned by the governing body.
The incident occurred during the September 21 encounter, where Rauf, fielding near the boundary, responded to taunts from Indian fans with a “6-0” hand signal and a gesture resembling a crashing aircraft—widely interpreted as a reference to the military tensions between the two nations in May. The ICC deemed the act inappropriate, though Rauf maintained it was directed solely at the crowd and not politically motivated.
As a result, Haris Rauf has been fined 30% of his match fee by the ICC for breaching the rules.
Sahibzada Farhan, meanwhile, who scored a gritty fifty in the same match and celebrated by mimicking a gunshot with his bat, has been spared any such fines. While the gesture raised eyebrows, Farhan defended it as a cultural expression common in his Pashtun heritage. ICC match referee Richie Richardson accepted the explanation but issued a formal warning.
The fine for Haris Rauf and the reprimand for Sahibzada Farhan follow the sanctions imposed on Suryakumar Yadav by the ICC for a similar breach of conduct. He was fined 30% of his match fee for post-match comments after the September 14 group game, which alluded to the military conflict and were deemed political in nature.
The Indo-Pak rivalry has intensified throughout the tournament. The group stage clash on September 14 was marred by India’s refusal to shake hands at the toss and after the match, further fuelling tensions. Verbal exchanges between players, especially between Pakistan’s bowlers and India’s openers have also been a common occurrence this year.
With both teams set to face off for the third time in the tournament, this time in the grand finale on Sunday, the spotlight is firmly on player conduct, sportsmanship, and the ever-intense rivalry that transcends cricket.
