The fallout from the much-maligned 2025 Asia Cup continues to loom over its governing body, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), and could lead to the ouster of its President, Mohsin Naqvi, with a no-confidence motion reportedly in the works.
This latest controversy stems from the dispute over the Asia Cup trophy, which remains at the ACC headquarters instead of with Team India.
According to journalist Saleem Khaliq, growing discord among ACC member boards is likely to prompt the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to initiate a motion for Mohsin Naqvi’s dismissal via a no-confidence vote. Member nations have reportedly split into rival blocs, with Pakistan and Bangladesh aligned, while India has secured Sri Lanka’s support. Afghanistan is said to be caught in the middle, shifting its stance between the two camps.
Tensions peaked after the Asia Cup final in Dubai, when India refused to accept the trophy from Naqvi, leaving the silverware at the ACC office. Since then, the dispute has escalated into a political standoff. Indian media outlets claimed Naqvi had apologized to the BCCI, a claim the PCB chief dismissed as “fabricated nonsense” and “cheap propaganda.”
Sources now suggest that India, frustrated by Naqvi’s defiance, is working to build consensus around a no-confidence motion to remove him from the ACC presidency. With Sri Lanka on board and Afghanistan still undecided, the numbers game could prove decisive in the coming weeks.
There is no publicly documented framework for initiating a no-confidence motion against a sitting ACC President. However, the BCCI reportedly believes that a breach of ceremonial protocol and a conflict of interest, stemming from Mohsin Naqvi’s dual role as PCB Chairman and Pakistan’s Interior Minister, provide sufficient grounds for action.
The Asia Cup, intended to celebrate Asian cricketing excellence, has instead become a symbol of how political tensions have seeped into sport. With Naqvi’s position under threat and the trophy still undelivered, the ACC faces one of the most unprecedented leadership crises in its history.
