Pakistan vs Iraq Asian Futsal Cup Qualifier Preview

The Pakistan national futsal team will officially take the field in a continental arena for the first time in history as they face seasoned campaigners Iraq at Prince Nayef Sports City Hall.

Originally slated for last month, the Group D qualifiers were delayed by a month, giving the team additional time to prepare.

For Pakistan, today’s contest marks a historic moment: their first-ever appearance in the Futsal Asian Cup Qualifiers, symbolizing the rapid growth of the small-sided game in the country.

While Iraq enter as clear favourites, Pakistan’s squad is brimming with confidence and eager to prove they belong on the continental stage. Iraq are a regional powerhouse, known for their pace, precision, and tactical flair. They were quarterfinalists in the 2024 tournament and have qualified for 13 editions overall, including a streak of six consecutive appearances in the main round. Ranked 47th in the world, Iraq present a formidable challenge for Pakistan.

Pakistan are drawn into a tough group that also includes hosts Saudi Arabia and Chinese Taipei. The winner of this group will join Australia (Group A), Thailand (Group B), Japan (Group C), Vietnam (Group E), Kyrgyz Republic (Group F), Islamic Republic of Iran (Group G), and Afghanistan (Group H) on the main stage in 2026. Group runners-up will have to contend with Kuwait (Group A), Korea Republic (Group B), Tajikistan (Group C), Lebanon (Group E), Uzbekistan (Group F), Malaysia (Group G), and Myanmar (Group H), as the best-placed second teams will punch their tickets to Indonesia.

Despite being underdogs against Iraq and others, Pakistan’s debut in the Asian Futsal Qualifiers has already sparked excitement back home, with the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) hailing it as a “milestone moment” for indoor football.

For Pakistan, this match is more than just a qualifier, it’s the beginning of a journey to establish futsal as a serious competitive sport at home. Whether or not the Green Shirts can upset Iraq, their participation alone marks a major stride forward for Pakistan’s football ecosystem.

Pakistan’s mainstream futsal journey begins at 5 pm tonight.
