Pakistani-origin cricketer Nayma Mughis Sheikh has made history by becoming the first-ever Scottish cricketer — male or female — to receive the Scotland National Sports Scholarship, marking a significant step forward for both women’s cricket and representation in Scottish sport.
Cricket Scotland confirmed that Nayma Sheikh, who has played 2 ODIs and 7 T20Is for Scotland, has been selected among the Winning Students 100 under the Scotland National Sports Scholarship program, which supports the country’s most promising student-athletes across multiple disciplines.
According to the board, more than 1,700 student-athletes across Scotland have benefited from the initiative since its inception in 2008. The program rewards academic and sporting excellence, offering financial aid, access to training facilities, and academic flexibility to help athletes balance their studies with competitive commitments.
Nayma Sheikh, currently pursuing a degree in Accountancy and Finance at the University of Glasgow, expressed pride in representing both her heritage and her country.
This year, 105 student-athletes from 31 different sports have been awarded scholarships under the Winning Students program, with each recipient receiving personalized support to reach their full potential on and off the field. However, this marks the first time in the scholarship’s history that it has been awarded to an active Scottish cricketer.
For Nayma Sheikh, the recognition represents not only a personal milestone but also a symbolic moment for Scottish cricket’s growing diversity — and a proud one for Pakistanis around the world watching her rise.
