The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced plans, confirming that the Abbottabad and Muzaffarabad stadiums are being considered for major upgrades.
PCB Chairman said discussions are underway to modernize both venues, which have long served domestic cricket but have never hosted an international match or Pakistan Super League (PSL) fixture.
He further revealed that Islamabad is set to receive a brand-new international-standard stadium within a year, while Karachi’s National Bank Stadium will undergo renovation after the upcoming PSL season.
Abbottabad Cricket Stadium, famous for its picturesque location at over 1,200 metres above sea level, has been praised by Wasim Akram as “the most beautiful stadium in the world.”
The venue has hosted First-Class and List-A competitions, including Quaid-e-Azam Trophy fixtures, and was used as the national side’s training base ahead of the 2013 Champions Trophy due to its England-like conditions. Despite its appeal, it has yet to stage an international match or a PSL game.
Muzaffarabad Cricket Stadium in Azad Kashmir, known locally as Narol Cricket Stadium (MCS), has been the home of the Kashmir Premier League since its inception. The ground has also served the community during emergencies, notably being converted into a hospital after major earthquakes.
Over the years, it has hosted numerous Under-19 and senior inter-district tournaments, but like Abbottabad, it remains absent from Pakistan’s international venue roster.
Upgrading both stadiums is expected to strengthen cricket in the northern regions and enhance their prospects of hosting major international events in the future.
