The Diplomat has praised Pakistan’s recent diplomatic performance in Washington, describing it as a strategic success amid shifting regional dynamics.
In a report, the magazine said India is now facing 50 percent US tariffs and has been excluded from a presidential visit. It added that US-India relations entered a freeze after New Delhi rejected Washington’s offer to mediate in the Pakistan-India dispute.
According to the report, Pakistan turned this crisis into a diplomatic opportunity. Islamabad openly welcomed and endorsed Donald Trump’s mediation role, a move the magazine described as calculated and effective.
The Diplomat noted that following the Pakistan-India conflict, President Trump invited Pakistan’s army chief to the White House. It further said that in September 2025, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir also visited the White House.
The report said discussions between Trump and Field Marshal Asim Munir extended beyond security issues. Talks covered trade and investment as well. As a result, Pakistan-US counterterrorism cooperation resumed, reviving a long-standing pillar of bilateral relations.
According to the magazine, Pakistan and the US signed a tariff reduction trade agreement in July 2025. Trump later announced that both countries would jointly develop major oil reserves. In December 2025, Pakistan also secured US approval for upgrades to its F-16 fighter jets.
The Diplomat added that in January 2026, Pakistan emphasized renewed diplomatic engagement with China. The magazine also noted that the US imposed a 50 percent tariff on India after failing to reach a trade agreement with New Delhi.
