ADB to Help Pakistan Replace Old Grid With Smart Solar-Powered Battery System

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is expected to provide financial and technical support for Pakistan’s shift from solar power to smart battery energy storage systems, along with support for digitisation, integrated planning, and data governance in the power sector.

The development came during a meeting between an ADB delegation and the Power Division ahead of the expected visit of the bank’s vice president later this month.

The bank is currently conducting studies on the impact of rooftop solar and battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Pakistan’s power sector. The meeting with Power Minister Awais Leghari also covered ongoing reforms and future cooperation in the energy sector.

ADB indicated interest in supporting new initiatives including digitisation, integrated planning, data governance, privatisation, and institutional governance, while also continuing technical assistance for AMI meters.

The minister said Pakistan’s power sector has shown resilience despite global energy challenges and emphasized the government’s focus on increasing the use of indigenous energy sources including local coal, hydel, and solar to keep electricity prices affordable.

Both sides agreed to continue close cooperation for building a modern, efficient, and sustainable power sector in Pakistan.
