Prices of Roti and Chapati Increased in Karachi

A rise in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices has pushed up the cost of roti and chapati across Karachi, adding to the financial strain on residents amid ongoing inflation.

Tandoor owners have increased prices by Rs. 5, citing higher production costs as many outlets rely on LPG due to limited availability of natural gas. Sajid Khan said there is no actual shortage of LPG in the country, alleging that certain market players are creating an artificial crisis to drive up prices through black marketing.

He said LPG is being sold at unregulated rates, ranging between Rs. 500 and Rs. 530 per kilogram in different parts of the city, with prices increasing on a daily basis. Khan warned that the situation could worsen if unchecked and criticized the government for failing to control prices, adding that demand for LPG has surged due to the ongoing gas shortage.

He urged authorities to take strict action against those involved in price manipulation. A local tandoor owner, Manzoor Hussain, said most tandoors have shifted to LPG, significantly raising operating costs.

He said the increase in LPG prices has left vendors with no option but to raise the prices of roti and chapati. Following the hike, low-weight roti is being sold at Rs. 25, heavier roti at Rs. 30, while chapati is priced at Rs. 20 in various parts of the city.

Residents have expressed concern over the rising cost of essential food items, saying the increase in roti prices after milk has further strained household budgets and urging the government to take immediate action.
