Punjab Announces Loans to Renovate Old and Dangerous Houses

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has expanded the “Apni Chhat Apna Ghar” (ACAG) program to include interest-free loans for repairing dilapidated houses and constructing additional floors.

Under the new initiative, the Punjab government will provide up to Rs500,000 for the renovation of deteriorating houses and up to Rs1 million for adding a new floor to existing homes.

The Chief Minister announced these changes during a review meeting, emphasizing that the goal is to prevent tragedies caused by unsafe structures, such as the recent building collapse in Kahna.

The meeting was informed that interest-free loans have already been approved for more than 180,000 families, with the provincial government allocating Rs217.8 billion for the project. To date, over 134,000 houses have been completed across the province, with thousands more under construction.

CM Maryam Nawaz directed officials to launch the new categories within three days and ensure the application process remains simple.

She reaffirmed her commitment to providing secure housing, stating that the government would provide practical financial assistance to those living in unsafe conditions rather than just hollow promises.

She also warned that any negligence in the execution of this flagship housing program would not be tolerated.
