Huawei Mate 10 Pro Review
The Huawei Mate 10 Pro is the latest addition to the Huawei’s flagship, Mate series and came along its variant – The Mate 10. Though the “pro” in its name may suggest that it’s a “jacked-up” version of the base variant, that’s not quite the case as the differences are quite confusing – for instance,The Mate 10 comes with an IPS QHD display which is slightly smaller as compared to the Mate 10 Pro’s slightly bigger AMOLED FHD+.Featuring an all-glass build, the Mate 10 Pro has an attractive rectangular design. The reflective strip at the back is purely cosmetic and rear-panel has a matte surface which is quite grippy for a shiny phone. Though the Gorilla Glass protection is shatter-proof, the scratch resistance isn’t as effective so getting a case is a good idea. Unlike the Mate 10, the Mate 10 Pro has a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor which for some users, is more convenient instead of a front mounted sensor. The sensor is blazing fast and one of the best in the market. One drawback is the absence of the headphone jack in Mate 10 Pro’s design, confusingly, the Huawei Mate 10 Pro does have one.
The FullView AMOLED display has a resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels which is quite low when compared to other premium flagships. It can, however, be ignored for a 6-inch display because the difference between FHD+ and QHD is almost unnoticeable unless you look real close. The AMOLED display is beautiful with pitch black darks and naturally vibrant contrast pallet. The color accuracy is top-notch. Sunlight visibility is great because the display’s brightness shoots past its maximum when it faces direct sunlight.
One of the greatest advantages of getting a Huawei Mate 10 Pro is that it comes with Android Oreo preinstalled. With EMUI8 on top, the Mate 10 Pro has several useful features – these features are well optimized to suit the hardware and don’t slow it down at all. Running their home-made chipset – the Kirin 970 – the performance is top-notch. Due to the Neural-network processor introduced in the Mate 10s, the Mate 10 Pro carries out most machine-learning tasks such as voice recognition, image recognition, and natural language processing much faster. Rest assured that the Huawei Mate 10 Pro can easily handle most resource-intensive apps easily with no hindrance. It does get hot at particular times but that’s probably due to the all-glass build so it won’t be much of a problem.
The dual-cameras have been enhanced in the Huawei Mate 10 Pro but the picture quality is quite similar to Mate 9’s. That’s expected because the sensor specifications are almost exactly the same as before – 12MP color + 20MP monochrome shooter – except the aperture size is slightly wider in the Mate 10 Pro. The cameras are able to take rich in detail, noise-less, vibrant, and natural photos. The pictures are much sharper but sometimes get “over-sharpened” causing the detail to get messed up. But these problems exist in the software section and will hopefully get fixed in future updates.
