Zong Partners with Fortumo for Direct Carrier Billing

Zong has partnered with Fortumo, a mobile payments company, to make carrier billing facility available for its customers in Pakistan.

Zong customers, with carrier billing facility in place, will now be able to buy apps and various other digital products online through their mobile balance instead of credit/debit cards.

Fortumo has a similar carrier billing arrangement with Telenor already.

All such app stores and other digital product marketplaces that use Fortumo solutions will be able to charge Zong customers through their mobile balance.

Any payments made at such stores will be deducted from customers’ mobile balance automatically.

Payments are processed without any additional information required from the mobile user.

According to data from World Bank, Pakistan has a credit card penetration of less than 1% (less than 1 million credit cards across 182 million inhabitants). However, an estimated 35 million Pakistanis now have a smartphone.

Besides app stores such as Google Play and Windows Phone Store, Fortumo’s platform is used by digital content providers and game developers, including Sony, HOOQ and Electronic Arts.
