PTCL is Taking Part in DTH License Auction Today

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) — through a sister concern — is participating in DTH auction to acquire one DTH license. The license could give PTCL rights to offer digital TV services in the country.

Smart Sky Private Limited is a PTCL company that has been shortlisted for the DTH bidding on November 23rd, 2016.

Smart Sky placed a Rs. 200 million bid for the license in the first round and submitted an earnest money of Rs. 30 Million, we have checked.

It must be noted that highest bid received during first round was Rs. 310 million. To win the auction, bidders must bid in excess of the highest bid with a gap of Rs. 10 million.

Smart Sky, as the name implies, will be part of PTCL products such as Smart TV or Smart Link. It is hoping to win a DTH license to offer digital TV services to customers across Pakistan.

Imran Janjua, General Manager Public Outreach & Corporate Communications, PTCL while speaking with ProPakistani confirmed participation and said,

“60% of our population comprises of country’s youth who are driving consumption thereby pushing for more communication channels and telecom choices including insatiable appetite for video content.

Our media and television industry has witnessed high growth rate over the past few years. With the largest communication infrastructure, PTCL is proud to embark upon its aim to bring digital revolution in Pakistan and its services such as SMART TV has been at the forefront of media & entertainment industry.

PTCL’s latest collaboration with Netflix – world’s leading internet television network with more than 86 million members in over 190 countries, is also now being made available to our customers across the country. “

He also added that the “DTH launch in Pakistan shall now provide a new platform for the growth of media industry as most of the countries in our region including Afghanistan have already launched these services. Our participation in the DTH bidding process is also in continuation to our efforts to bring more digital services in the country.”

While we don’t have operational details with us as of yet, our sources confirm that Smart Sky will be strategically integrated with other PTCL product. Integrations may include customers being able to pay their DTH bills through monthly telephone bills or they could call PTCL support numbers for any DTH related queries as well.

Smart Sky will also have access to PTCL’s country wide sales and distribution network to position itself as one of the top DTH players on the launching date.

While Smart Sky will be a separate business entity, it is likely to get all the required support that PTCL’s gigantic backhaul can offer.

  • Foolish of ptcl ….. It might had saved them a lot in money if they had upgraded their internet services and allowed IPTV services instead. Who will pay for the STB ,dishes and satellite transponder rent? It will all jack up the price on DTH sadly.
