Following announcement of the HEC Vision 2025, Punjab government has decided to review the decision to end 2 year BA and MA programs.
The educational authority in the province, Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) says that implementing the new system is impossible within a year.
PHEC will be reviewing the decision and is advised to produce a report within a week. Authorities will consult with PHEC and the relevant authorities.
Higher Education Minister for Punjab, Syed Raza Ali Gillani ordered the PHEC to review HEC’s letter (Vision 2025) and to send a report on the findings.
Restructuring The College Education System
He said, in response to a question, that the 2 year degree programs will be phased out after the PHEC has finalized the decision. The Minister added that for these plans to bear fruit, the college system will need to be restructured.
According to the PHEC Director General Dr Shahid Soroya, it is impossible to change the current system within a year. He said that there are a large number of colleges in Punjab which is why this change cannot be made in a such a short duration.
Not Feasible to Implement 4 Year BS Programme
He further added that it is also not feasible to implement a 4 year BS program in every college in Punjab, decision would be made on a case-to-case basis with some colleges offering the associate program and others offering the full program.
The DG said,
We will consult the vice chancellors, private sector colleges, principals of public colleges and all stakeholders before submitting the findings to the minister,
A workable plan would be devised by the PHEC as per the Director General, to avoid harming the education system and affecting the students in a negative way.
