Shahid Afridi has stormed into the headlines yet again after his fierce batting display last night in the county circuit, helping his team qualify for the semi-final spot.
Hampshire (249-8) routed Derbyshire (148-10) in the NatWest T20 Blast, thanks to Afridi’s maiden T20 century.
Batting first, Hampshire blasted a mammoth 249 in their 20 overs at the 3aaa County cricket stadium.
Afridi put on a sensational performance with the bat (101), thrashing the opponent bowlers all around the park, hitting his first ever T20 ton which included 7 sixes and 10 fours off just 43 balls.
This is the highest ever T20 score against Derbyshire, beating the previous record of 242-2 by Middlesex. It is also the highest score made by Hampshire and the fourth highest score overall in the county cricket, also taking them to the finals day for the seventh time in eight years.
The fan favourite Boom Boom, who has a habit of being a Big Match player, came in to open the innings and it was surely his day. Everyone knows what happens when he’s on song, don’t you? Afridi proved to be a nightmare for the Derbyshire bowlers, and of course the captain.
He didn’t care if the ball was bowled at a 90 mph or by the top ranked bowlers like Imran Tahir, he made sure the ball crossed the ropes quite easily – a couple of those sixes went out the ground as well – and with a frightening velocity as well.
Captain of Hampshire also chipped in with a very useful 55 off 36. All the bowlers conceded at over 10 runs an over, and that tends to happen when Afridi is in such a mood.
Afridi didn’t have any success with the ball, however, his team easily demolished the Derbyshire’s batting line-up with Proteas fast bowler Kyle Abbot and the Englishman Liam Dawson taking three wickets each.
