Google Drive is NOT Shutting Down, Just Getting Replaced

If you are one of the 800 million people using Google Drive for your online storage needs and have just come across a news article about Google Drive shutting down, don’t panic!

Earlier this week, Google made a major announcement regarding the fate of Google Drive, the company’s premier online storage service. They have decided to discontinue the Google Drive app for desktop platforms. I repeat, only the desktop apps for Mac and Windows will be shut down.

Blogs everywhere have a way of turning a simple piece of upgrading technology into something much more sinister, like making you afraid of losing all your data. Sensationalist headlines, one after the other, can make even the sanest person doubt if a news is really true. Unless you have really opened the article and read it from top to bottom, it isn’t easy to grasp the true meaning of a news. Some people have interpreted the news in a whole other way.

Google will indeed officially end support for the apps, starting on December 11th, 2017, and then completely shut them down on March 12th, 2018. But that is not such a big deal when you consider the fact that the search engine giant has already released alternatives for people who want a desktop client.

What’s the alternative?

Google has released two new apps which you can download in place of Google Drive, depending on your usage:

  1. Backup and Sync
  2. Drive File Stream

Here’s what both the apps do:

  • Backup and Sync

Officially the new version of Drive, Backup and Sync can synchronize local files to Drive on the web, making them available on all your devices. Backup and Sync is the one you want if you are an average consumer (although organizations can use it too) and is basically the same as the original Drive client.

When you install Backup and Sync, it will create a folder on your computer called “Google Drive”. You can simply place any folder or file and it will automatically sync with a folder named “My Drive” in Drive on the web, making it available on all your Drive devices. This is a 2-way sync, so changes you make online are reflected on all your devices, and vice-versa.

  • Drive File Stream

Drive File Stream is an option for more enterprise-driven customers and organizations. It will let you stream My Drive and Team Drive files directly from the cloud.

Drive File Stream has now been turned on for all customers, but the download links will only be visible if you currently show them for Backup and Sync / Google Drive for Mac/PC.

The service will officially become available for most organizations, starting from the 26th of September.

Here is a comparison of Drive’s File Stream and Backup and Sync:

So folks, the next time someone tells you that all your data on Google is disappearing, now you know what’s the real deal.
