Xiaomi Joins the Qi Wireless Charging Consortium

Xiaomi might be gearing up to offer wireless charging in its upcoming smartphones.

Although Xiaomi is yet to release any official statement regarding its new advancement, its name showed up on the Qi Wireless Power Consortium list- the group of tech firms that have the goal of promoting the Qi wireless charging platform.

Following in Apple’s Footsteps

Xiaomi seems to be following in Apple’s footsteps when it comes to wireless charging.

Apple joined the consortium in February and released all its models: iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X, with wireless charging for the first time ever.

On 21st September, the Chinese manufacturer joined the Wireless Power Consortium, and it seems that its next flagship model, Xiaomi Mi 7, might support wireless charging.

Although the Qi standard for wireless charging has been supported by several major brands: Samsung, Nokia and Google, for years, the technology is still in its early phase.

Rumor Mill For Xiaomi Mi 7

Xiaomi Mi 7 is rumored to release in the first quarter of 2018. Here is a list of features to expect in the new upcoming Xiaomi flagship:

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset
  • a 6-inch OLED display made by Samsung
  • two variants of the phone: one with 6 GB of RAM and the other with 8 GB of RAM
  • a camera with a dual-lens rear camera similar to the Mi 6
  • a wide-angle and telephoto lens for the cameras
  • a ceramic body encased in glass
  • an edge-to-edge display
  • an in-screen fingerprint sensor

Good News for Xiaomi Fans

The news of Xiaomi joining the Wireless Consortium will be welcomed by its fans as the brand has its own loyal base of customers who wish to use wireless charging but are not willing to pay the high costs offered by brands such as Samsung or Apple.

The Xiaomi Mi 5 and Mi 6 were launched in April, but the launch of Xiaomi Mi 7 is due somewhere between January and March 2018. It is probable for the upcoming phone to compete with Samsung Galaxy S9 and LG G7, which are expected to be released around the same time.
