Punjab Government has requested to switch off mobile service in Lahore for today (July 13), in order to control the “law and order situation” in the areas surrounding Allama Iqbal International Airport.
The local government has already sent a letter to the Interior Ministry, and has demanded a closure for mobile service in the vicinity for an eight-hour period starting 3 PM till 11 PM.
The request has been made in order to block communication between protesters who will gather at the airport on the arrival of ex-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter.
The notice, sent by the Secretary of GOP, reads:
I am directed to refer to PPO/IGP, Punjab letter NO. 9625/OPS/S-I dated 13.07.2018 on the captioned subject [i.e switching off mobile service] stating therein that to control law & order situation on 13th July 2018, switching off the mobile service is needed.
According to the letter, cellular service in these areas is required to be switched off:
- Lahore airport and its vicinity
- Walled City Area
- Shadra and its vicinity
- Nawab Town and its vicinity
The Interior Ministry, apparently, has honored the local government’s request – cellular service in the aforementioned areas of Lahore is now suspended. We’ll update this post as the story develops.
