President Arif Alvi has inaugurated Pakistan’s first ever eye bank in Islamabad’s Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital.
While addressing the inaugural ceremony, President Alvi said that as many as 20 million people in the country are blind due to various eye diseases.
Out of these, at least 200,000 people have corneal diseases, and they can see again after the Cornea transplants.
“Al-Shifa Trust conducts 800 eye transplants every year,” he said, adding that the number is not very encouraging because the country does not have the trend of eye donation or quality facilities for preservation of Cornea, which is quite worrisome.
He appreciated the efforts of Al-Shifa Trust for establishing the country’s first-ever state-of-the-art Eye Bank with the collaboration of an American NGO, Eversight Eye Bank. The bank will collect corneal donations and will carry out transplants.
He underscored the need for a public awareness campaign to make people realize the importance of eye donations with the help of press and media.
Mr. President expressed satisfaction over the fact that Al-Shifa is going to establish a chain of eye banks across Punjab.
This will prove to be a revolutionary step in returning eye sight to those who deserve it the most.
