Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital Unveils Pakistan’s First Eye Bank

President Arif Alvi has inaugurated Pakistan’s first ever eye bank in Islamabad’s Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital.

While addressing the inaugural ceremony, President Alvi said that as many as 20 million people in the country are blind due to various eye diseases.

Out of these, at least 200,000 people have corneal diseases, and they can see again after the Cornea transplants.

“Al-Shifa Trust conducts 800 eye transplants every year,” he said, adding that the number is not very encouraging because the country does not have the trend of eye donation or quality facilities for preservation of Cornea, which is quite worrisome.
