Quinton De Kock to Lead South Africa in Pakistan Test Series

South African wicket-keeper, Quinton De Kock, has been named as South Africa’s Test captain for the 2020/2021 season. De Kock’s first assignment as captain will be the upcoming series against Sri Lanka. The team will then travel to Pakistan for a highly anticipated tour.

Recently, South Africa announced that they will be touring Pakistan after 14 years for a three-match T20I series and two-match Test series in January.

De Kock replaced Faf Du Plessis as limited-overs captain last year but was ruled out as Test captain at that time by Cricket South Africa Director of Cricket, Graeme Smith. Smith said that De Kock is already South Africa’s leading batsman, wicket-keeper, and limited-overs captain, and he would be over-burdened if he is made the Test captain.

De Kock’s appointment as Test captain is not permanent though, as Cricket South Africa clarified that he has only been named captain for one year. His extension will depend on the team’s performance during his tenure.

Cricket South Africa’s new Selection Convener, Victor Mpitsang, said “Quinton is happy to continue in the role for the next season and is comfortable with the balance of the workload and we back him fully as a captain.”

De Kock has had a hard time as South Africa’s captain as of yet, he has captained South Africa in 8 ODIs and 11 T20Is. He has only won 4 ODIs and 3 T20Is as captain.
