Fawad took only 22 Test innings to score five centuries, surpassing the Indian middle-order batsman, Cheteshwar Pujara, who took 24 innings to reach the landmark. The former Indian captain, Saurav Ganguly, the legendary opener, Sunil Gavaskar, and Vijay Hazare are the next three batsmen on the list.

Formerly, Pakistan’s ex-captain, Younis Khan, held the record for the fastest Pakistani batsman to reach five Test centuries. Younis achieved the feat in 28 innings. He is followed by Saleem Malik, who scored his first five Test centuries in 29 innings.

Here are the quickest Asian batsmen to five Test centuries:

Player Innings Taken
Fawad Alam (PAK) 22
Cheteshwar Pujara (IND) 24
Saurav Ganguly (IND) 25
Sunil Gavaskar (IND) 25
Vijay Hazare (IND) 26

All five of Fawad’s Test centuries have come against different oppositions and in different countries. His first Test century was on his debut against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 2009. His other centuries have come against New Zealand, Zimbabwe, and West Indies away from home. He also has a century against South Africa at National Stadium Karachi, his home ground.

Fawad has been in scintillating form ever since his comeback to the national Test side last year. He has scored four centuries ever since his return. Only England captain, Joe Root, has scored more centuries during the time period.

The 35-year old scored an unbeaten 124 in the first innings as Pakistan declared their innings on 302/9 on the third day of the Test match. Fawad’s brilliance with the bat rescued Pakistan from a precarious position and helped Pakistan take charge of the match. West Indies closed the day’s play struggling at 39/3.
