Here’s Pakistan’s Predicted T20 World Cup Squad

Pakistan cricket team is considered as one of the favorites for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Despite being one of the most consistent T20 sides in the world over the past year, the Men in Green face a selection dilemma for the mega event.

As announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC), 10 September is the deadline for the teams to submit their 15-man squads for the 2021 T20 World Cup. Pakistan will have to figure out their best possible combination in the next few days as they look to win the T20 World Cup for the second time in their history.

Pakistan’s fragile middle-order has been a cause of concern for the Green Shirts and despite trying numerous players, the management and selectors have been unable to identify the strongest combination. The likes of Sohaib Maqsood, Azam Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Asif Ali and Khushdil Shah have all been tried in the upper and lower middle-order over the past year but none of these players have been able to establish themselves as a regular part of the side.

Another area of concern for the selection committee is to identify the all-rounders that would be part of the squad. Shadab Khan, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Nawaz, Faheem Ashraf, and Mohammad Wasim Jnr. will be vying for the limited spots in the T20 World Cup squad and it will be interesting to see which players will miss out on the plane to UAE.

The selectors have a habit of selecting players on a whim for the mega events and it could also potentially lead to a comeback to the national team for experienced players Shoaib Malik and Wahab Riaz. Both the players have not been part of the national team setup for quite a while but their solid performances in Pakistan Super League (PSL) 6, held in the UAE, could lead to a comeback for the T20 World Cup squad.

Here are our predictions for Pakistan’s T20 World Cup Squad:

The First XI

Babar Azam (c)

Pakistan’s all-format captain is one of the leading T20 batsmen in the world. Currently ranked as number two in the ICC T20I batsman rankings, Babar has been in sublime form in T20 cricket. He has amassed 523 runs at an average of 37.35 and a strike rate of 132.74 in 14 T20I innings in 2021.

Babar’s record as an opener for the national team has been magnificent as well. He has scored 1,430 runs at an average of 46.12 and a strike rate of 136.19 in 35 innings he has played at the top of the order.

Mohammad Rizwan (wk)

The gritty wicket-keeper batsman has been a revelation for Pakistan at the top of the order. Rizwan is currently the leading run-scorer in T20Is in 2021 having scored 752 runs at an average of 94.00 and a strike rate of 140.03 in 14 innings in the calendar year.

Overall, Rizwan has played 17 innings as an opener for the national side and has scored 880 runs at an average of 80.00 and a strike rate of 139.02, including 1 century and 8 half-centuries.

Rizwan and Babar have scored two 150+ runs partnership at the top of the order in 2021. They have scored 521 runs at an average of 52.1 in the 10 innings they have played together as openers for Pakistan.

Sohaib Maqsood

The 34-year old was recently called up to the national squad after a gap of five years due to his impressive performances for PSL outfit Multan Sultans in the sixth edition of PSL. Sohaib finished as the third-highest run-scorer and was named as player of the tournament for his exceptional performances in the UAE leg of the PSL.

He scored 480 runs at an average of 47.55 and a magnificent strike rate of 156.77 in 12 innings. His comeback to the national side has been less than impressive though, and despite getting some good starts, Sohaib has been unable to convert them and has scored only 52 runs at an average of 13.00 in 4 innings.

Despite an underwhelming comeback, Sohaib has an impressive record in UAE and has the ability to take away the game from the opposition while batting at number three.

Mohammad Hafeez

Hafeez finished as the leading run-scorer in T20s in 2020 but his performances have dropped significantly since then. He has scored 106 runs at an average of 11.77 and a strike rate of 113.97 in 9 innings in the calendar year so far.

The 40-year old is an accomplished off-spinner and his versatility could prove to be handy for the Green Shirts. His bowling record is exceptional having picked up 60 wickets at an average of 22.26 and an economy rate of 6.54 in 113 T20I matches.

Hafeez has been an integral part of Pakistan’s T20 side and will likely bat at the number four spot.

Fakhar Zaman

The left-handed opener has lately been utilized by Pakistan as a pinch hitter in the middle-order. He is likely to continue his role as he has played some crucial knocks lower down the order. Fakhar has scored 73 runs at an average of 14.6 and a strike rate of 152.08 in his last five innings he has played at number four and five.

Fakhar’s ability to hit big and play a quick-fire inning of 20 odd runs could prove to be crucial lower down the order. The 31-year old can also be used as a backup opener.

Imad Wasim

Imad Wasim is likely to be included in the team at the number six spot. His boundary hitting ability and accurate left-arm spin provide Pakistan with a lot of options. Imad can also be utilized as an opening bowler which is a good option for a team to have in the UAE.

The 32-year old’s form has been a cause of concern for the selection committee. After being dropped from Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand, Imad was recently recalled to the side. He has only played three T20Is in 2021 and has failed to impress. He has picked up 4 wickets at an average of 27.00 and scored 26 runs at an average of 8.66.

Despite the poor form, Imad is expected to be on the plane to UAE due to his exceptional performance in the country. He has picked up 18 wickets at an average of 13.44 in 11 T20I matches he has played in UAE.

Shadab Khan (vc)

Pakistan’s limited-overs vice-captain has been struggling for form in 2021. His numbers are less than impressive, having picked up only 5 wickets at an average of 27.40 in 7 T20I matches in the calendar year.

Shadab’s handy batting in the lower-order and his electric fielding make him a sure shot starter in the Pakistan T20I team. His leg-spin in UAE will be crucial and if he can get back into his bowling form, he has the ability to cause trouble to the opposition batting unit.

Hasan Ali

Hasan Ali’s resurgence has been a major positive for Pakistan. He has been in sublime form, both with the bat and the ball ever since recovering from injury late last year. The 27-year old has picked up 17 wickets at an average of 14.88 in 11 T20I matches he has played in 2021.

His pinch-hitting ability in the lower order is impressive as well. He has scored 58 runs at a strike rate of 207.14 in 7 innings this year. Hasan can also be promoted up the order to up the ante if needed.

Shaheen Afridi

The 21-year old is one of the leading fast bowlers in the cricketing world. He has been brilliant for Pakistan ever since his debut in 2018. He has picked up 32 wickets at an average of 27.40 and an economy rate of 8.17 in 30 T20Is in his career.

Shaheen will look to continue his momentum after a magnificent performance in the Test series against West Indies. He will likely be handed the new ball and Pakistan will be hoping that he utilizes his wicket-taking ability upfront.

Haris Rauf

Pakistan will need Haris Rauf to bring his A-game to the T20 World Cup. Rauf’s inconsistency has been a worrisome sign for the national team but he is more than likely to be included in the T20 World Cup squad.

Rauf has picked up 28 wickets at an average of 25.07 in 23 T20I matches. His poor economy rate of 8.94 is a cause of concern though.

Usman Qadir

The 28-year old leg-spinner can prove to be the trump card for Pakistan in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Qadir has had a solid start to his international career, having picked up 20 wickets at an average of 16.30 and an economy rate of 7.40 in 16 matches he has played.

Qadir was merely a passenger in Multan’s title-winning team in PSL 6 having played only 4 matches in the tournament but he was under the mentorship of two of the greatest leg-spinners in cricket history, Mushtaq Ahmed and Imran Tahir, as well as Shahid Afridi. Hopefully, he can replicate the performances of his mentors.

Rest of the Squad

Mohammad Hasnain

The young fast bowler has been a part of Pakistan’s T20I squad for quite a while now. He is expected to make the squad as the fourth seamer due to his express pace. He has taken 17 wickets at an average of 27.82 in 17 matches he has played so far.

Faheem Ashraf

Faheem’s accurate seam bowling and his six-hitting ability lower down the order make him a decent player to have in the squad. Faheem has picked up 35 wickets at an average of 25.80 in 42 T20I matches he has played. He has also scored 259 runs at an average of 11.77 and a strike rate of 128.21 in 29 innings.

Sarfaraz Ahmed

Pakistan’s former captain is expected to be a part of the T20 World Cup squad as a backup wicket-keeper. Sarfaraz has an impressive record with the bat in UAE as well. He has scored 210 runs at an average of 30.00 and a strike rate of 121.38 in 10 innings he has played in the country.

Sarfaraz is still more than capable behind the stumps and can be called upon to the line-up to stabilize the middle-order.

Mohammad Wasim Jnr.

The exciting young talent has had a terrific start to his career. After making his breakthrough at the PSL, Wasim made his international debut in the T20I series against West Indies. Wasim was impressive in the recently concluded inaugural edition of Kashmir Premier League (KPL) as well. He showcased his talent with the ball and his ability to hit huge sixes with the bat was also on display.

Mohammad Wasim Jnr. could prove to be the ‘X-Factor’ in the upcoming T20 World Cup.

15-man Squad:

Babar Azam (c) Shadab Khan (vc) Mohammad Rizwan (wk) Mohammad Hafeez Fakhar Zaman
Imad Wasim Hasan Ali Shaheen Afridi Haris Rauf Mohammad Hasnain
Usman Qadir Sohaib Maqsood Faheem Ashraf Mohammad Wasim Jnr. Sarfaraz Ahmed

Due to the ongoing pandemic, each team is also allowed to bring as many reserve players as they want at their own expense. It is expected that Pakistan will take hard-hitting opener Sharjeel Khan and explosive middle-order batsman, Azam Khan as the reserve players for their T20 World Cup squad.
