Lahore Qalandars’ wicketkeeper-batter Sam Billings delivered a match-defining performance, smashing a record-breaking 19-ball half-century to propel his team to a commanding 79-run victory over Quetta Gladiators in their fourth match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL X) at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
Billings’ blistering unbeaten knock powered the defending champions to an imposing 219-6, the highest total for the Qalandars in the ongoing tournament. Reflecting on his innings, Billings highlighted a tactical edge over Quetta’s Mohammad Amir.
“It’s quite funny because I’ve played a lot against these guys, especially Amir,” he said in the post-match presentation. “He got me out in the ILT20 final with a bouncer, so I knew he was going to try again today. It’s nice to get a little bit of comeback.”
The Englishman’s aggressive batting dismantled Quetta’s bowling attack, setting a new franchise record for the fastest half-century by a Qalandars batter in PSL history. His 19-ball effort surpassed Umar Akmal’s 22-ball fifty from the league’s inaugural season in 2016, cementing Billings’ name in the record books.
Quetta Gladiators, tasked with chasing 220, faltered under pressure from Lahore’s disciplined bowling unit, collapsing to 140 all out. The one-sided contest underscored Qalandars’ dominance as they bounced back emphatically from earlier inconsistencies in the tournament.
