Kuwait’s Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs has directed mosques to reduce prayer durations, close indoor prayer halls for most services, and limit air conditioning usage as part of a nationwide energy-saving campaign.
The directive, issued by the Mosques Department in Hawalli Governorate, follows a request from the Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy to lower electricity consumption amid rising demand.
Mosques across Kuwait’s six governorates will also face scheduled power cuts starting this week. According to the circular, indoor prayer areas must remain closed during all five daily prayers, with worshippers instructed to pray in outdoor courtyards instead.
Indoor spaces will only be used for Friday prayers, with air conditioning set to 22°C in automatic mode from Thursday evening until the end of Friday services. For daily prayers, any air conditioning used in outdoor areas must be set to 25°C.
Women’s prayer halls will remain closed except in mosques where religious lectures are held. In such cases, cooling must also be limited, and sections closed after the sessions. Imams have been told to reduce the time between adhan and iqama, especially for Dhuhr and Asr, and to keep the prayers brief. Scheduled blackouts will occur after Dhuhr and Asr prayers.

Whats the reason behind these actions?
Can’t believe a Muslim country is trying to shorten prayers and trying to close women’s prayer halls
