Salman Ali Agha Reveals the Only Way PSL Can Grow

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 is in full swing, but a lukewarm response from fans has raised doubts about the stuttering growth of the league, with Salman Ali Agha coming forward to present his solution.

Pakistan’s T20 captain and Islamabad United middle-order enforcer believes the PSL’s long-term growth depends less on foreign star power and more on the emergence of local players as consistent match-winners and household names.

Speaking during the early stages of PSL 2025, where he has already played a key role in United’s strong start, Salman Ali Agha reflected on how the league can avoid stagnation.

“No league can grow without local players stepping up,” Salman said. “The Pakistan players will need to become superstars; that’s the only way the league will improve. Foreign players may be available some years and not others—but it’s the local players who truly elevate a league.”

Salman’s comments come at a time when the PSL is seeking to cement its position among the world’s top T20 leagues. While overseas participation remains a talking point each season, availability concerns due to global scheduling have raised questions about the sustainability of relying too heavily on international names, something PSL 2025 has suffered from as well.

“In the top leagues around the world, the local players carry the teams. If we can build that kind of depth and star power in Pakistan, this league will only grow stronger.”

For Salman, the solution lies in developing homegrown performers who can deliver consistently—and become fan favorites in their own right.

His words hold true. Pakistan has a history of fans packing the stadium just to watch a few names. Shahid Afridi and Imran Khan were such phenoms who easily attracted the masses, while Shoaib Akhtar, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, and countless others were not far behind. Pakistan has struggled to produce such names since, which has directly correlated to the dwindling crowds in the stands.

In PSL 10, no local player has distinguished himself once again, but Ali Raza and Sahibzada Farhan have shown glimpses of promise. If Babar Azam, Shadab Khan, Saim Ayub, and Shaheen Afridi can deliver on their potential, the PSL will remain in safe hands.

For a league built on competitive balance and gritty, high-quality cricket, the next stage of growth will depend on local talent. If they are as invested as Salman Ali Agha, the league will continue to grow.
