Peshawar Zalmi may be searching for consistency on the field, but their off-the-field team management has pulled off a stunning move to keep pacer Luke Wood with the team for the rest of PSL 2025.
The Englishman was only supposed to be with the team in a limited capacity but has been one of the better bowlers for the squad, forcing Zalmi’s team management to find a way to register the left-armer as a permanent part of the squad.
The situation stems from the tournament’s replacement player framework, which allows franchises to temporarily bring in players for those ruled out due to injury, national duty, or other reasons. Luke Wood was brought in to replace Nahid Rana for a while as the latter served his national commitments. With the Bangladeshi back, Zalmi needed a way to keep hold of Luke Wood, and they have done just that.
Their solution? Parting ways with George Linde, who was initially brought in as a replacement for Corbin Bosch, a foreign player. By releasing a foreign player, Zalmi found a workaround by creating an international roster spot on the team, thereby converting Wood into one of their main overseas players.
Under PSL rules, teams are allowed a maximum of four active overseas players in their playing XI, but they can have more in the full squad, provided replacement requests are approved by the league’s Technical Committee. Once a replaced player becomes available again, teams must release the substitute unless they reshuffle their squad to accommodate the player under a different designation, which is exactly what Zalmi did here.
The substitution, though harsh for Linde, makes sense for Zalmi. Linde has made only one appearance for Peshawar Zalmi, scoring no runs and conceding 20 runs in two overs, while Luke Wood, on the other hand, has taken six wickets in four matches.
While such administrative gymnastics often fly under the radar, they can be the difference between a calculated title charge and a misfiring campaign. In this case, Peshawar Zalmi seem to have read the rulebook and the conditions just right and will be hoping that Wood’s continued place in the team can lead them to the playoffs and maybe even more.
