Czech Mountaineer Dies in Fall on Pakistan’s Nanga Parbat

In an unfortunate event, renowned Czech climber Klára Kolouchová has died after reportedly falling into a ravine while attempting to scale Nanga Parbat, Pakistan’s second-highest mountain and one of the world’s most perilous peaks.

The 46-year-old was part of a seven-member expedition that included her husband. The team arrived in Pakistan on June 15 and reached Bonar Base Camp in the Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan two days later.

According to officials from Pakistan’s Alpine Club, the accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning between Camp I and Camp II, near Bonar Base Camp. Preliminary reports suggest the tragedy may have been caused by an oxygen cylinder explosion, though this has yet to be confirmed.

Diamer Additional Deputy Commissioner Nizamuddin said that Klára Kolouchová’s teammates were able to return to base camp and confirm her death. Her body remains at the site of the fall, and recovery teams have been dispatched to the area despite the immense challenges of the mountain’s terrain.

“We are devastated by the loss of Klára Kolouchová, an extraordinary mountaineer who had conquered some of the world’s highest peaks,” said Karrar Haidri, vice president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan. “Our hearts go out to her family, friends, and the global climbing community during this painful time.”

Klára Kolouchová was celebrated for her pioneering achievements. She was the first Czech woman to summit both Mount Everest and K2, a feat that cemented her place in mountaineering history. Her attempt on Nanga Parbat — at 8,125 meters (26,657 feet) — was part of her goal to climb all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks.

Known as the “Killer Mountain,” Nanga Parbat already holds a grim reputation among the locals and climbers alike. With a fatality rate of around 22%, it is considered the third most dangerous of the 8,000-meter giants, having claimed more than 60 climbers’ lives. Its massive faces, including the towering Rupal Face and the sheer Rakhiot Flank, make rescue operations extremely difficult.

Rescue teams and high-altitude porters were immediately mobilized, though officials say it may take days to confirm the precise location and bring Klára Kolouchová’s body down.

As recovery efforts continue, tributes have poured in from around the world for a climber whose courage and determination inspired so many.
