In a heartfelt nod to Pakistan’s golden cricketing moment, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet has approved a historic initiative to honour the 1992 World Cup-winning squad at Peshawar’s Imran Khan Cricket Stadium.
Going forward, every enclosure at the stadium will be named after the players who brought home the nation’s first, and only, ODI World Cup title, further underlining their status as perhaps the finest ODI team in Pakistan’s history.
The proposal, tabled by the provincial sports department, received formal approval during the latest cabinet meeting. Soon, fans attending matches at the Imran Khan Stadium will find themselves seated in stands bearing the names of legends who cemented their legacy in cricketing folklore.
Led by the indomitable Imran Khan, the 1992 squad featured icons such as Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram, Aaqib Javed, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Saleem Malik, Ijaz Ahmed, Aamir Sohail, Ramiz Raja, Mushtaq Ahmed, Iqbal Sikander, Moin Khan, Zahid Fazal, and Wasim Haider. Their legacy will now be woven into the fabric of Peshawar’s cricketing heritage.
This move follows the earlier decision to rename the iconic Arbab Niaz Cricket Stadium after the team’s captain, another step in preserving the region’s rich sporting legacy.
