Australian Legends Shocked at Exclusion of Best BBL Bowler From Pakistan Squad

Australian legends Aaron Finch and Michael Clarke were surprised by the exclusion of Haris Rauf from Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026, despite his strong performances in the recently concluded Big Bash League (BBL 15).

Haris Rauf finished BBL 15 as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker, claiming 20 wickets in 11 matches. However, his form was not enough to secure a place in Pakistan’s T20 World Cup squad for the tournament, which will be held in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8.

Speaking on a local sports platform, Finch said he was surprised by the decision, adding that Rauf brings an “X-factor” to the team. He acknowledged that Rauf can sometimes be expensive but stressed that this should not outweigh his strengths.

Aaron Finch said that the most important quality in T20 cricket is having a genuine wicket-taking bowler who can operate across all three phases of the innings. According to Finch, taking wickets, especially on flat pitches, is more valuable than maintaining a low economy rate.

Clarke also said the omission would likely have come as a shock to Rauf. However, he suggested that selectors may have prioritized playing conditions and specific team roles over performances in overseas leagues.

Clarke explained that World Cup squads are often selected based on the conditions where the tournament is held, with players chosen to fulfill defined roles. He added that the role Rauf played in the BBL does not appear to align with what the selectors are currently looking for in Pakistan’s setup.

The former Australia captain also highlighted the importance of form and match practice ahead of major ICC tournaments, saying teams aim to select players who are not only experienced but also entering the competition in strong form.
