Samsung Galaxy A80 Launched With World’s First 48MP Rotating Triple Cameras

The long awaited Samsung Galaxy A80 has been announced and it comes with a rotating triple sensor camera that doubles as selfie and rear camera.

This phone and its rotating camera are true definitions of technological innovation. This premium midranger also debuts Samsung’s new infinity display that was announced last year.

Design and Display

The phone has a brushed metallic look with the triple sensor rotating the camera on the top. Curved glass is installed on both sides of the phone. The sensors are arranged horizontally. It comes in three colors: Phantom Black, Angel Gold and Ghost White. The fingerprint sensor is housed inside the display.

Samsung Galaxy A80 features 6.7 inch Super AMOLED display with 1080 X 2400 resolution and Sony-esque 20:9 aspect ratio. The screen has no notch or punch-hole to distract from the full-screen bezelless display.

Unlike the rest of Samsung’s premium phones and midrangers, A80 isn’t water or dust resistant and it doesn’t have stereo speakers or the headphone jack, which is unfortunate considering that’s what keeps Samsung above everyone else these days.

Internals and Storage

The Galaxy A80 is the first smartphone ever to use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 chip, which was announced just yesterday. It has an octa-core processor with 2x Kryo 460 Gold cores working at 2.2GHz (A75-like) and 6x Kryo 460 Silver clocked at 1.7GHz (A55-like). The Adreno 618 is in charge of graphics.

However, it only has one variant with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB built-in storage. No higher capacities are available, and the phone does not have an SD card slot for extendable memory, which is odd by Samsung standards.

It runs on Android 9.0 Pie with one UI.

Camera

Coming to the star of the show, the rotating camera has a 48 MP main sensor, 8 MP ultra-wide sensor with 123-degree FOV and a third time of flight sensor.

Even though the camera is making news and seems like the best solution for saving space and hardware, we are concerned whether the rotation spring will hold for long. Since every time you take a selfie, the tiny motors will rotate the camera. You can also manually slide the camera part, but its more of a forced approach.

While a 48MP selfie camera should be best in class and even allow for unmatched selfie videos, the sensor is the same one that’s used in the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 which costs at least three times less than the A80.

Battery and Pricing

Samsung Galaxy A80 is packed with 3700 mAh battery that supports 25W fast charging but just like the A70, it does not support wireless charging. It is available at a price tag of $730 and will go on sale at the end of May.
