US Government Bans Eight Chinese Apps for Spying

Yesterday, surprisingly, the Trump government signed an order banning eight Chinese apps on account of being a threat to national security. According to the order, the apps might capture sensitive user data from the device they are installed on and since the users can be US Federal employees, the government doesn’t want to take any chances.

The banned apps are:

  • Tencent QQ
  • CamScanner
  • SHAREit
  • VMate
  • Alipay
  • QQ Wallet
  • WeChat Pay
  • WPS Office

These applications will not be available on the Google Play Store and App Store in the US after 45 days.

The government believes that the parent companies of these applications have ties with the Chinese government and could be extracting sensitive data. This is pretty much similar to what TikTok and Huawei have been accused of.

Apart from this, the Trump government has also blacklisted some Chinese Telcos, and based on the order, the New York Stock Exchange has announced that it will proceed with a White House order to cease trading of three Chinese telecom companies namely China Telecom, China Mobile, and China Unicom.

As far as the applications are concerned, the ban will come into effect after President Trump steps down from his duties. Hence, there is a chance that things might change.
