Misbah Vs. Mickey – Who Was Pakistan’s Worst Head Coach? [Comparison]

Pakistan head coach, Misbah-ul-Haq, is under fire for the team’s poor performance on the tour of New Zealand. Pakistan’s recent string of results have been poor as well, having lost an ODI against the 13th ranked Zimbabwe and the Test series against England. There have been rumors that Misbah is soon to be replaced as the head coach after the upcoming series against South Africa, with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in talks with a top foreign coach.

Misbah was appointed as the head coach 16 months ago, taking over reins from South African Mickey Arthur, after a poor campaign in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Many feared that Misbah was too inexperienced to be the coach of the national side, having recently retired from International cricket and having little experience as a coach of a top side.

Mickey on the other hand was an experienced coach who had already coached the likes of South Africa and Australia at the international level. Pakistan’s performances under Mickey were impressive as well, at least in white ball cricket. Pakistan lifted the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 by defeating arch-rivals India under Mickey’s tenure and also became the number one T20I side in the world. But, as has been the norm with Pakistan cricket, the performances started to deteriorate and Pakistan’s failure to qualify for the semi-finals in ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 was the final nail in his coffin.

As Misbah’s tenure as head coach nears an end, let’s compare the performances of Pakistan team under both the coaches.

Mickey Arthur

Mickey Arthur took over the reins of the team in May 2016, under his coaching Pakistan played a total of 133 matches in all formats. Pakistan’s Test performances were underwhelming, while ODI performances had room for improvement, but the T20I performances were immaculate, winning eleven series consecutively.

Tests 28 10 17 1 0.588
ODIs 68 32 34 2 0.941
T20Is 37 30 7 4.285

Misbah-ul-Haq

Misbah’s record in ODI’s seems immaculate but the stats do not tell the whole story. Pakistan have played only 5 ODIs in Misbah’s tenure, three of them against Zimbabwe and two against a depleted Sri Lankan side. Pakistan’s T20I performances have also taken a dip in the recent years and the picture does not look pretty for Misbah.

Matches Won Lost Drawn/Tied No Result W/L ratio
Tests 10 2 5 3 0.4
ODIs 5 4 0 1 0
T20Is 17 7 8 2 0.875

    • No it’s selectors r responsible who awarded them such responsibility, with out considering their merit

  • Respect misbah as a great player but sorry as a coach and selector waqar and misbah both are worst.
Mockey arther was the best coach and azhar mehmood really was a best bowling coach

  • We must hv foreign coach, that we can curse / condemn the performance of our team. Taboo of talent must be broken, must accept fitness trends, playing techniques & selection on merit, to enable our team to be competble.
