Pakistan Approves First-Ever Safety Standards for Auto Industry

In an unprecedented development, the Cabinet Committee for Disposal of Legislative Cases (CCLC) on Friday approved the safety standards for the auto industry.

The safety standards will now be forwarded to the federal cabinet for approval. Once approved, these regulations will become effective for the auto sector.

According to details, the CCLC has approved eight safety standards for locally manufactured vehicles. These are Child Restraint System (PS:5574 and PS:5575), Safety Belts (PS:5578 and PS:5579), Air Bags (PS:5576), Electric PowerTrain for EVs (PS:5550 and PS:5551), and Helmet for Riders (PS:1402).

These safety standards have been developed by the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) and are very close to Japanese standards.

PSQCA faced tremendous difficulties in developing the national standards for vehicles assembled/manufactured in the country due to overlapping stakes of three ministries.

These stakeholders included the Ministry of Science and Technology, which governs the PSQCA, the Ministry of Industries, which deals with the auto sector, and the Ministry of Climate Change, which is working to curb carbon emissions.

  • Dear safety standards approval ministry must apply at least 4 to 6 air bags for knees and shoulders safety of car occupants, and car company must provide 1 kg fire extinguishers CO2 cylinder in 5 to 7 seater vehicles,at regular least safety standards.

  • Gentlemen, this country thanks to the ‘legends in the their own minds’ bureaucracy, has managed to take this country back to the Stone Age. Just read the headline and see where neighbouring countries are with respect to knowledge , technology and innovation

  • Finally, done something good. Other necessary things like turbo charger in and above 60 horse power in diesel and 70 hp petrol engine should be included. And most important Quality control.

  • Though quite late but good initiative.
Rear view mirrors on motorcycles should also be included in the list.

  • Nothing good can be expected from this industry and its so called managing MOIP. When the Federal Minister of this industry is himself an industrialist how the benefit will be shifted to general public??? And the other reason for destruction of entire country is beaurocrates who are destroying the countrys like blood sucking parasites.

  • Sounds like a positive initiative let’s see how far it gets implemented & followed. The PSQCA must exercise it’s full authority to see if the automobile industry follows its through & through. The irony is we make policies but keep look looking for some one to follow, the resistance to accept it’s utility & safely remains a swan song
