Two major gas companies in Pakistan are gearing up to collect a staggering Rs. 697 billion from consumers during the current fiscal year 2023-24, with fixed gas meter rent likely to surge to Rs. 2,000 per month (previously Rs. 460/month) for non-protected customers as both entities aim to avoid last year’s staggering losses, well-informed sources told ProPakistani.
Sources said Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) have independently estimated their revenues at Rs. 358 billion and Rs. 339 billion, respectively.
Out of the substantial sum of Rs. 697 billion, Rs. 657 billion will be directed towards covering the cost of gas procurement. To make ends meet and to offset the mounting operational expenses of both companies, a proposal to hike gas rates by 100 percent is under consideration.
If this increase fails to materialize, the dire consequence would be a combined loss of Rs. 395 billion for the gas companies, sources added. This looming financial crisis follows a troubling precedent, as last year both SNGPL and SSGC suffered a loss of Rs. 245 billion due to the non-implementation of higher gas rates.
If approved, the impact of the impact of the 100 percent rate hike will be felt across the board, with fixed charges for non-protected customers expected to soar from a nominal Rs. 460 to a substantially higher Rs. 2,000. Additionally, the proposed increase in gas prices for domestic consumers is set to take effect in the next billing cycle.
This move by the gas companies has ignited a heated debate among consumers and policymakers alike, as it will undoubtedly lead to an increased financial burden on households and businesses across the country. The coming months will reveal the true extent of the consequences, as discussions on the proposed price hike continue and consumers brace for their escalating gas bills.

Why the gas companies are not controlling their looses and management expenses.The Sui Southern Gas is facing 21% loss while SNGPL losses touches almost 11%.The inefficiency ,non professional attitude and ultra high salaries of management have brought both the companies at the verge of collapse.The totall loss of both companies is almost touching 3T Pkr.This huge amount is because of the non professional imported CEOS inducted by PTI government, who badly failed to curb menace of theft and to fill the gape the same is recovered from consumers by escalating gas prices of gas after every two months.This trend should be immediatelly halted and the sitting inefficient CEOS of both should be sent home to bring both cos on the track.
Yes, you are right & please add in it the present local gas production is sufficient for domestic user, why not they shift the burden of imported LNG to the IPP, Captive Power, Industries including Fertilizer Sector, CNG station etc.
Correct me if I am wrong, does this mean everyone with a gas connection will pay a minimum of Rs 2000/- and then they will pay gas charges for the amount they use, example if a person uses gas of Rs 500, he will pay Rs 2500.

I don’t think it is the end, include taxes etc. I saw a current bill with gas charges 180, present charges 460 (2000 in proposal) but the bill is 840 instead of 640 ie 200 taxes.
Now recalculate your 500 gas, 2000 proposed, plus meter rent, plus GST, WHY etc
Why we pay 2000 P.M.it mean govt close their eyes.
For the time being, government close it eyes for
1) actual remedy & to curb corrupt practices which they called line loses.
2) imported CEO & MD & their luxurious benefits.
3) They have the easy way to say, one of IMF conditions to be fulfill.
Government should recover all old dues of gas companies from all non payers acrros the board.

Please publicise the salary structure ncludng bonuses being aid to the clowns working in these gas companies and also how much gas is being stolen because theft without the connivance of gas company officials is not possible
I dedicatedly served in SSGC being meritorious Mechanical Engineer for over 3 decades purely inducted on Merit as NO DNA within company would match with my DNA since the company incorporated in 1954 till to date, and Alhamdulillah I am well versed how SSGC works. During my tenure I had close interaction with SNGPL, Ministry of Petroleum, OGRA, and all oil/gas explorer companies and I am well aware about their level of competency as most of them even don’t know the definition of “Natural Gas”.
In a nutshell, I would like to describe the hardship faced by all consumers is purely due to highly incompetent management and their family/friends incompetent guys inducted on senior Post entirely ignoring merit and rights of the existing competent one. The management in SSGC is generally known as parashooter as they are inducted from outside having NIL relevant Natural Gas sector experience, just grabbing controlling seats enjoying highly paid salaries and fringe benefits on the cost of Pakistani tax payers, moreover they have been busy to induct their incompetent family/friends guys from every corner of the globe since decades, as such both management and their blue eyes guys hold dual Nationality having no interest on Pakistani masses.
It’s high time to determine who relates to who in Gas companies and the way they inducted in National Energy Companies wherein every Pakistani National has equal right rather a dual Nationality who has no interest in Pakistan.
Should I be assigned at top post and allow to form a team of dedicated retired professionals (as I am still active with sound health and mind, Alhamdulillah), I assured to all the consumers that I will take NO-SALARY, NO-FRINGE BENEFITS until they would get uninterrupted Gas supplies as well as their gas bills would cut by 50% of the present bills.

It only happens in Pakistan. Instead of tightening their own belt all govt. run organisation take the easiest route and put burden on consumers.
These companies are inefficient, curropt and over staffed. The best solution is to sell these companies to private sector.
