Glenn Phillips’ Bad Run of Luck in IPL Continues

Gujarat Titans (GT) player Glenn Phillips has been ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2025 after sustaining a groin injury during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 6. An IPL statement confirmed that Phillips has “returned to New Zealand.” GT, currently leading the table with four wins from five games, has not yet named a replacement for him.

Glenn Phillips, who had not featured in GT’s starting XI this season, came on as a substitute fielder after the fifth over of SRH’s innings. However, he limped off by the end of the sixth over after injuring himself while fielding. The incident occurred when Phillips fielded a throw to the wicketkeeper’s end during a quick single by Ishan Kishan and Nitish Kumar Reddy. He immediately clutched his groin and was helped off the field by GT staff.

This is the second setback for GT in a week, as they had earlier lost Kagiso Rabada on April 3, who left the tournament to attend to a personal matter. There is no update on Rabada’s return, and GT has not named a replacement for him either.

GT had only seven overseas players in their squad for the season and are now down to five. Jos Buttler, Rashid Khan, and Sherfane Rutherford have played all games so far, while Karim Janat and Gerald Coetzee remain available. However, Coetzee is still recovering from an injury that ruled him out of the SA20 and Champions Trophy earlier this year.

GT’s overseas player shortage could pose challenges as the tournament progresses, with the team yet to address the gaps left by Phillips and Rabada.
