UK Lauds Pakistan’s Leadership on Climate Action

The British High Commissioner to Pakistan, Christian Turner, lauded Pakistan on Sunday for announcing no new coal power projects and for contributing less than one percent to global carbon emissions.

In a series of tweets, Turner announced that Pakistan is a global leader in climate action under the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan. However, despite this, Pakistan remains the fifth most vulnerable country to climate change.

Turner also revealed that Pakistan and the UK are cooperating to tackle climate change.

While speaking via video-link at the Climate Ambition Summit 2020, PM Khan said that Pakistan has already replaced two coal power-based projects with hydroelectricity.

The premier said, “As far as our indigenous coal goes, we have decided to produce energy either by coal to liquid, or coal to gas, so we do not have to burn coal to produce energy”.

In his address, PM Khan said that the government has decided to mitigate the effects of climate change with a nature-based solution that involves planting 10 billion trees within the next three years.

“We’ve also increased the number of national parks and the protected areas from 30 to 45. At the same time, we have decided to not have any power based on coal,” he remarked.

By 2030, 60 percent of all the energy produced in Pakistan will be either clean or renewable and the country will run 30 percent of its vehicles on electricity.
