Meet The Two Most Pointless Phones of 2017

The year is 2017. Phone companies are no longer crazy about fitting the biggest screen in a smartphone. The new craze is to fit the biggest screen in the smallest body. Thanks to that, we now have truly beautiful phones whose screens cover every inch of the smartphone’s front — even curving on the edges on some.

Yet, in this day and age, there are two phones that have lost their relevance. In fact, they have lost the purpose of their existence, forcing us to ask the question that, why were they even released?

Samsung Galaxy Note 8

After the infamous Galaxy Note 7 fiasco, Samsung has always been in a tough situation concerning its phablet series. Many wondered if the company would even bother continuing the series and maybe, they were right.

The Galaxy Note series may have made sense when it existed for people who loved huge screens but not any more. Samsung’s own flagship, the Galaxy S8, has a display that is about half-an-inch bigger than what the original Note had.

Even then, it would have been reasonable as a bigger option if it weren’t for one more fact — one introduced by Samsung itself, the Samsung Galaxy S8+.

Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ (from left to right)

The “Plus” version of Samsung’s flagship, the S8+’s sole purpose is to exist as an oversized option for people who love big phones. Isn’t that what the Note was all about? A kind of an oversized flagship?

The two phones are like two peas in a pod. Even the Note 8’s display is almost the same as the S8+ (just 0.1 inches bigger). They are so similar in almost every aspect that, if you didn’t really know about the external differences (the stylus and the camera), you would be hard put to distinguish one from the other.

There are only three major differences:

  • Camera: Note 8’s primary camera is the same as the Galaxy S8+ but it also comes with a secondary 12 MP camera that has a telephoto lens, adding some extra features like lossless zoom and software-based depth of field. In normal day-to-day usage, you aren’t likely to notice any difference.
  • Stylus: The stylus is an integral part of the Note 8 and probably the only reason a person should buy the phone. However, is it really worth the extra money? Not many people I know have bought a Note for its stylus.
The stylus sounds like more of a luxury than a necessity.
  • RAM: The Note 8 has 6 GB of RAM, as compared to the S8+’s 4 GB. For a phone, 4 GB is already considered an overkill, meaning you aren’t likely to notice any speed bumps in normal usage.

Now comes the worst part about the Note 8 — the price tag. The phablet retails for $930, around $80 more than the Galaxy S8+. If you’re in Pakistan, that price gap is likely going to be even bigger, especially considering that the Note 8 was just released.

Why not just do away with the Note 8 and release the S8+ with a stylus?

iPhone 8

Just like Samsung, Apple is itself responsible for making the iPhone 8 (and the 8 Plus) redundant. The iPhone 8 was overshadowed by the stunning and nearly bezel-less iPhone X before the launch event was over. In fact, it was never really the phone that the world was waiting for, and Apple knew that.

The iPhone is more of a brand statement than a smartphone choice these days. People buy the latest iPhone to own the latest and the greatest iPhone, not just to buy a good phone.

But with the iPhone 8, there is really no point buying because as soon as it was released, there was already a much better choice — the iPhone X. Nobody is going to fawn over the 8, with its giant last-gen bezels and a design that is already a bit on the dated side.

Here are some reasons why the iPhone 8 is the most pointless phone Apple has ever released,

  • There is a better option — the iPhone X (If you only want the best iPhone and are willing to spend 2x the money you would on an arguably better bezel-less phone – Xiaomi Mi Mix 2)
  • It looks and feels exactly the same as the iPhone 7 (including the giant bezels).
  • If you are going to buy the cheaper iPhone, you may as well buy the iPhone 7 which now costs $549 ($150 cheaper than the cheapest iPhone 8 and would feel almost the same.

Final Remarks

Apart from the number at the end of their names, the iPhone 8 and Galaxy Note 8 have nothing in common — except that both don’t really have a good reason for existing. Whatever my opinion may be about the two phones, one thing is for sure! Samsung and Apple are still going to sell millions and millions of Note 8’s and iPhone 8’s.

The Note 8 has already broken the record for being the most pre-ordered Note phone ever, proving that as long as you are a global smartphone giant, people don’t really care if your last smartphone was prone to exploding whenever it felt like it.

Moreover, it also goes on to show that companies like Apple and Samsung, who now operate a smartphone duopoly, have a way of convincing people to shell out money that no other company has mastered. Who would have thought that people would be actually willing to buy a $1,000 phone in 2017?

  • “Just like Samsung, Apple is itself responsible for making the iPhone 8 (and the 8 Plus) redundant.”

So true! Ask the apple boys they will know the pain of it :D

    • Iphone are best sellers and reliable because the OS is less vulnerable to hacks and viruses.
Better resale value and long life durability. Whereas androids are totally opposite.

      • Hacks and viruses :D Hahaha.

And yet you still pay a lot more for an okay product. Being optimized and blah this blah that, this is the only point you guys can use to justify the exorbitant price tag and to be honest there are many flagship android phones that are pretty ‘optimized’.

And this generalization about androids show how much research you have put into this.

I think the writer of this article has beautfilly surmised a typical iPhone user by this line ‘People buy the latest iPhone to own the latest and the greatest iPhone, not just to buy a good phone.’

        • ok here’s a thought provoking question. What’s the difference between a Premium android phone (galaxys, LGs, Pixels etc) and entry level android phone? If your answer is nothing. Then why people spend TOP DOLLAR to buy S8, Pixel or G6s & if your answer is hardware then why A year old android needs Custom ROMs & rooting to be able to run the New Android version of that time?

          • people pay premium for better features. water proofing, stereo speakers, better camera, better screen, better sunlight visibility, and the list goes on. Alot of entry level mobiles gets updated to latest version unless you are using qmobile. My redmi note 4 released at start of this year got android 7.0 update.

            • I’ve Nexus 6P never used Local Chinese brands ever. my F&Fs though have Samsungs, LGs etc & all of ’em devices got updated once only to MM. some are still waiting for Nougat but an iPhone 5 i’ve that got iOS 10.3 like a year ago… So my Point exactly..

            • isn’t is though? No every Android-head is able to buy a Pixel or galaxy every year. so that’s your 1%. the rest make do with their old phones pretty much the root way.

      • Agreed.
Apple apne iPhone users ko 5-7 years tak software update deta hai. Android sirf 2 saal wo bhi mar mar k
Quality applications sirf iOS par milti hai aur ye sirf wo bata sakta hai jo iPhone user ho aur sath mein android se bhi wabasta ho
iPhone mein investment smart choice hai because of software updates , smooth and quality applications
Ek bar ki investment minimum 5 years tak ka relief
Last but not the least it’s always a personal preference, whether you choose android or iOS
I personally like both but iPhone is a wise choice.
Now it’s up to him, let’s see when he will going to commit suicide ?

        • First of all no one uses phone for 5 years. Second features wise iOS is still 5 years behind android. They are offering features now which are part of android since years.

          • I made my point clear to you why peoples are using iphones now I’m waiting for just one thing, when and where you are going to commit a suicide ?

          • I use iPhone for 5 years or even more because of latest iOS support that I receive on same day as released in USA.

Android always disappoint in terms of OS updates, performance and it’s complex with poor interface, the screen not lean and it’s annnoy as soon as you turn it on, a web of option on screen is seriously irritating ?

      • All leaked nudes of famous hollywood actresses from their phone is a result of icloud hack. #KateUpton #JLawrence etc etc

      • Iphone no longer best seller and IOS is vulnerable to hacks viruses and data leaks and Battery Sucks @SS. Android is gotten stronger and better than ever. Do your research before posting BS.

        • Kids (droids) can never understand the maturity of iphone, the only brand very well job done on planet earth.

        • Life is easy on iPhone.

I don’t want my phone a bank of more and more hardware specs as not everyone of us is an advanced user and smartphone playboy, most of us want peace of mind, solid specs and easy apps.

Thanks Android for introducing new features and thanks Apple for making them premium. ☺️

    • I’m with you on that. I have used both iphone & android phones. And android is way way better as the it’s the most convenient & user friendly. Only one thing that iphone has an edge over android phones is its awesome graphics, except that it’s really dull and not-a-fun to use at all.

    • Iphone is a legend in every way from begining upto now.Ill tell you a simplest reason why iphone is far more better than any android kid.Iphone programming language of task in is just some words of command after too much study they done their job, on the other hand android does the same task using a command page full of words thats why they use more processor cores n power n time.but iphone does the same task using a lil part of power and processor cores and time and the best one is less risk of errors.androids are kids.they cannot meet the standards of iphone.never ever.

    • Easy mate. It’s a matter of choice that meets individual preference. Both Pros and Cons are relative with respect to user’s need.

I use both iPhone7 (iOS11) and Xiaomi Note 7 (Nougat), but iPhone earns a heighest satisfaction level and peace of mind. Loading a phone will lots of hardware specs and abduant customization isn’t everything. iPhone is a winner in terms of trust, mature specs, premium services, rich support and decent hardware interfacing with iOS as long as you are not seeking to control every thing. Android suits to creative guys who want to take control their smartphones altogether.

In a nutshell, it’s called evolution, iOS vs Android competition is healthy and beneficial to end users. I want to see Microsoft Windows active too, this will enabled a torrent of new ideas.

    • I’m using S8 and am I disappointed? Yes. A lot. Bullshit phone, got good looks and works like a donkey. Hangs and isn’t smooth. The workflow is stupid. Hate the Andy

    • Bhai aap aik new iphone 3-5 year tak baghair problem k use ker k daikho us k baad koi bhi flagship android use kerna, aap ko sab samajh aa jaye ga. Ham jitna marzi boltay rahain aap ko kabhi samajh nahi aa sakta. Mein nay 2012 mein iphone 5 liya tha aur aaj tak baghair kisi issue k use ker rha hoon.

      • While some of my friends complain that their iPhone 5S has become slow and whatnot. So honestly speaking, they do face problems.

  • pointless article!

because you don’t know anyone who uses stylus its a pointless device?
iPhone x is a show off (to tech industry/investors/etc) and anniversary device, doesn’t mean it will see a future iterations.

  • “The iPhone is more of a brand statement than a smartphone choice these days. People buy the latest iPhone to own the latest and the greatest iPhone, not just to buy a good phone” TF!? people buy iPhone coz its their choice of ecosystem of apple & its products. same goes for Android aficionados out there.

  • People think iOS Hack ni hota etc

Hack ni hota ti Jail Breaking kya cheez hai

that is just hacking of th OS whichmis Closed Source

    But iPhone iPhone hai

Chahy Lagya wixh takky da kujj na hoy
    Plastic Body k ee
    Rs 80k de dety

    What a Fool Logic

    :p
