The expiration date of the Automotive Development Policy (ADP) 2016-21 and the release date of the 2021 budget is drawing closer. Meanwhile, the government is preparing to welcome a paradigm shift in the local automotive industry.
While discussing the matter with the media, the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Climate Change, Malik Amin Aslam, stated that Pakistan will have a huge influx of Electric Vehicles (EVs) by the end of 2021 after the introduction of the Automotive Industry Development and Export Plan (AIDEP) 2021-2026 and the new EV policy.

The SAPM added that this development is aimed at improving the economy, reducing pollution, and creating better opportunities for Pakistanis.
He said that after the introduction of the EV policy for two-wheelers and three-wheelers, electric bikes, rickshaws, and small commercial vehicles are becoming a norm in Pakistan, and that the new EV policy for 4-wheelers and these other vehicles seeks to do the same for passenger cars and commercial vehicles.
Aslam further highlighted that the new EV policy will catalyze the development of eco-tourism, aided by the normalization of electric means of transportation across the country. He reiterated that this development will create jobs and will rehabilitate Pakistan’s environment across the country.

While this news is promising, the question of whether the current infrastructure will be able to cater to the imminent influx of EVs in Pakistan still remains. Only time will tell if the government is able to manage resources aptly to deal with the sudden paradigm shift.
